Junk the junk

That spam is s-o-o annoying. It doesn't only clog up your inbox with annoying trivia (how trivial can you get with all those penis enhancements?) but also the methods taken to combat it can bring even bigger problems. I've recently been unjustly accused by the spamcops, with the result that some of my emails are being bounced back while others that appear to have been sent, don't get through and I can't tell if they have or not. Grrr!

But even worse is junk mail. OK, we recycle it (having carefully removed the name and address) but just think of the environmental resources that go into its production and delivery ...

And what about junk phone calls? Most of them go away once we tell them we live in a council flat so no thanks, we won't be needing a conservatory ... but why do they always phone just as you're stirring cheese sauce/delousing the children/dishing up the grub? I don't like to be nasty to them - it must be the job from hell - but some of them seem to think it's OK to be nasty to ME!

Well, this is me in fairy godmother guise coming up with a solution:

Go here to register with the mail preference scheme that should stop the vast majority of your junk snail mail. And here for the telephone preference scheme to stop this misuse of your phone.

You're welcome!

Wow! I am communicating with a real fairy godmother! Now, can you please sort out an agent for me ... you know ... if you're not too busy.

I'm not stopping the junk phone calls, simply because my 3 year old enjoys talking to them.

The telephone one worked for me but not the mail one. I get offers of loans and credit cards every day (no kidding!) and christ knows how many catalogues that I haven't ordered.

I had some woman phone my mobile the other day. She wanted to sell me a new phone. I don't need a new phone. As long as this phone works, it'll stay. When I told her that she started on about how I need bluetooth, wap and gawd knows what else. No I don't. My life is fine without it, thanks. She then said "do you really want to be seen as being some old fuddy-duddy amongst your peers?" What????? Fuck off!!

Ah so thats what happens when I get 'spit back' from your mail address - thought you dint like me no more!

Sharon, the MD wanted to drag me into the twenty first century to put all our mobiles on the same network (some cunning deal or other). I dug my high heels in, refusing to budge from my ancient brick type mobile - a vodafuddy. He tempted me away with this liddle iddy biddy pink shell that tinkles at me. I love it now and if anyone tries to part me from it......

If you or your ISP is running spamcop that may be the problem - spamcop is savage and indiscriminate and actually not the best spam filtering system on the planet...
For the rest, blame marketing managers everywhere!
And wait for the constant bombardment by text messages.

Interesting aside - kids are starting to leave myspace because so many adults have started to hang out there specifically to market to teens.

Let me know, anyone,if you want me to send you a gmail (googlemail) invitation-- it is a really nice email (free) and has a great spam system in which all the spam automatically goes into a separate folder, then you can bulk-delete it without even looking at it. (The system does this for you after 30 days anyway).
Sorry if I sound like an advert, but I use Outlook at work and am plagued by spam, whereas the gmail system works just great.

I'll second that Maxine and the Spam Tin is great. I also have the gold dust invites if needed.

I also second Maxine's comments on Gmail/Googlemail re spam.

It's only this week I've experienced two emails hitting my normal inbox that are clearly spam b'st***s. Before that it was only the occasional one in a fortnight or so, and even that was only in the last few months.

But they are getting cuter! Not pleasantly, like a fluffy ball of cat, but cuter, as in sharper, like the proverbial longstanding icicle...

We have to live with it. Gmail is pretty good at containing the infiltrators. Oddly, the Google bar is the opposite. It eventually grew roots on my PC, so I was forced to disable it last night. Tonight, it tried to contact something or other on the net, so I said "no" in Symantec terms. Now I have a Google Bar free zone! (It took another centimetre out of my screen display and I didn't use it anyway! Bye, bye, Google Bar!)

Well, that's my experience anyway!

Heh! Caroline thinks you're a fairy! Are you going to tell her, or shall I?

First the techy stuff. You almost had me. I hadn't worked out this gmail business at all and didn't realise it was an alternative to Outlook. It was looking good ... I was abandoning rabbit in headlights mode and seriously thinking about it. Then Cfr mentioned disabling toolbars and Symantictoc and the panic has reared up again ...

Now Caroline ... I'm getting worried about you. I can see the signs ... I have this vision of you 3 mths from now, sitting red-eyed, unfed, unwashed and friendless working your way through a blogroll numbering hundreds. I'm concerned that it won't be 'til then that you look back and see me not so much a good fairy as an evil spirit who stole your life! You have been warned!

Debi,
For a moment I thought that my webcam had been left on and you could actually see me! Your description was so very precise. Genius :)

I heed your warning oh wise wise fairy godmother woman and I will try not to add any more to my blogroll.

Now about those wishes you owe me ..

Debi - Goooglemail is good, especially when it comes to incoming spam. Hardly anything spam like hits the main inbox, it goes in the spam box. In the last four months I’ve had only two spam emails hit my inbox with an average of over 100 hitting my spam box in a one month period. You can also access it anywhere, anytime, as it’s net based like hotmail, but simply LOADS BETTER. It’s fast loading from screen to screen and keeps emails in conversation threads so you don’t lose things. Now, I wonder how much I should charge googlemail for that marketing unsolicited speil…
The toolbar, I think, comes from the main google site. As I have automatic downloads (within reason), it installed itself. But then it got all clingy and I couldn't switch it off. So I simply disabled it within Internet Explorer tools. Done and dusted! More screen for me to see again!
A bit cheeky these downloads though! Yahoo did the same some time ago... But all gatecrashers to my screen scene get the boot!
