Neatly linking the Blog Action Day on the environment with Maht at Moon Topples' Phoctober project ....
The best way to deal with food miles, packaging, additives etc is to grow your own.
If, like me, you have only a balcony, there are still ways you can eat what you grow.

Hello Debi,
I found you on Maht's Moon Topples, a click on your name and Voila! here I am.
Lovely tomatoes, made me feel homesick. Last couple of years my Niall and I grew our own herbs, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers (bell peppers or as we call them in Australian capsicum), even lettuce, cabbage and red cabbage. I made chilli jam from our birds eye chillies.
This post was the first I read, I will be back to read more.
Cheers!

Can...uh...
Could I, uh, have a tomato?
Hi Gaye and welcome, I grow herbs on the balcony too. Amazing what you can do with a teensy space. We're going to be getting a wormery too soon which means we'll be reducing our landfill rubbish to almost zero.
Maht - Grow your own!
Hmm, yes, good theory. I have just one teensy problem... Having encouraged the rest of nature into my garden, now anything I try to grow is gobbled up by snails, squirrels, guinea fowl and all the other creatures with whom I live in "harmony" (including the beasties and wormies in the compost heap). The only things that flourish are the Mediterranean herbs and the lemon tree... Can I send you some lemons perhaps?
You bring the lemons, I'll bring the gin ...
yum x
I tried to grow beetroot once... they were pretty much like your cherry tomatoes!
Gin? Yes please.
I'll vouch for the tomatoes, mmmmm. Balcony crop - delicious.
I'm scared of tomatoes.
Good job I didn't post the pic of the strangely mutated ones then, Sharon! The attack of the killer tomatoes ...
Lemons are freshly plucked from the tree. Where's the gin?
Your place or mine?
Definitely yours, Ab Van.
I want to sip g&t and watch the whales frolicking in the spring sunshine - as opposed to watching the garages crumble in the autumn chill.
