They've got a really interesting initiative going on in Australia tonight.
(Or was it yesterday? Or possibly tomorrow? Never could wrap my head round time zones.)
Anyway, the point is that at 7.30pm (their time) there's an appeal to give an hour for the earth.
Check it out here.

Brilliant idea, although it will be counter-productive for anyone under a certain age. I lived through the 1973 power cuts and loved it. I was heartbroken when normal service was restored.
Seems like a nice idea- unless you have a lot of raspberry ripple in the freezer as I do!
Like this.
And the words " An hour for the Earth"..
Think of it, if the World all gave an hour for the Earth..
Steerforth - yes I remember them too. And as I recall there was a baby boom 9 mths later! (Unfortunately I was too young to play ...)
Mutley - just don't open the freezer door. Surely you can last an hour without raspberry ripple ...
Marie- ain't it just ...
Jan - quite. It's the psychology as much as the practical gains that make the concept so powerful.
Too good an idea to leave in Oz. It's extraordinary that a notion so simple & yet so graphic hasn't been applied globally. Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth should put their muscle behind it.
Hi Dick and welcome. Just had a quick glance at your blog and am impressed. A poet and writer? You'll fit in here perfectly!
As for your idea - agreed. But maybe we shouldn't leave it up to others to organise. Maybe we could do this ourselves via our blogs and Real Life contacts.
What do other people think?
Hi Debi, passed on the info to relevant students (you are super useful so i'll e mail you and tell you exactly what we're up to over here) Anyway this is for Dick. When the intergovernmental report was published on the 1st Feb, about 3 million frenchies turned off for five minutes. This was a Friends of the Earth initiative.
I have students who would like us to do it again but during the day as they felt that at night time there wasn't enough impact. I will let you know when they plan to do that. It would be really nice if they got support from all over the world.
V - let us all know and we can all link and publicise.
I'm sure something along these lines has been done here. Don't think it was just power cuts - though I do remember them. (It once meant we had to miss Dr Who.)
