Frightening facts Debi. I do think Global Warming is a problem, even if I appreciate the nice weather.

Debi, I don't think anybody, apart from maybe the odd crank, now thinks that global warming isn't happening. The debate is not about that but about what's causing it. The recent television programme "The Great Global Warming Con" (or some similar title) accepted from minute one that GW is real. Their arguments were
1. There have been many fluctuations in global temperature over the millenia. This is just another one of those.
2. The cause of the warming is sunspot activity and is not related to carbon dioxide emissions.
3. Even if carbon emissions do play a part, the human contribution is minimal and far less than , say, piles of rotting vegetation, eg leaves, farting animals in fields and etc.
The arguments were convincingly presented but of course as a layperson one doesn't know and meanwhile a green lifestyle saves the worlds resources and is generally a good thing. But whether that will hve any impact at all on global warming is where the debate is. Two separate issues maybe.
Meanwhile, enjoy the sun!

Oh oh oh oh. read this first Joan: http://news.independent.co.uk/environment/climate_change/article2355956.ece

It seems the Great Global Warming Swindle was a wee bit of a swindle itself.

Oh bother that isn't the whole link. Try that again.

Just make sure it's all stuck back together and you should get to the article in the independent.

Hi Verilion. Nice to talk to you. I know this is a very educated blogspot and I suspected that somebody might come back and hit me on the head with the Independent article. Ouch. At the time, I watched the programme, was pretty convinced by it then read the article and ended up in my familiar cold-compress-darkened room scenario.
I don't know. The programme clearly did make serious errors and distortions but I suspect there's at least a grain of truth in it and that there may be other factors at work which make the "lower your carbon footprint and save the planet" message less clearcut than it seems at first.
But I don't know. keeping the carbon footprint low is a good idea for other reasons so we may as well do it.
The real point I was wanting to make to Debi is that the debate is not about whether global warming is real but about what is causing it.
Anyway, I'm just off out to recycle my Independents then I have to polish my solar panels and adjust my wind fan. It's a busy life Carruthers.

Joan, sorry it was only a virtual article and it certainly wasn't meant as a slap. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that the more information we are given the better informed we can be. We just need to be a little sceptical about the information sometimes (and that includes 'An inconvenient Truth'.) I have been recommended
The Weather Makers' by Tim Flannery.

No, no Verilion, I didn't experience it as a slap. Not at all. I thought it was great thst you went to all the trouble of locating the article - that was some task - and I hope other people will read it. And if it had been a slap I would have deserved it for describing the programme but conveniently omitting the article - which I had read.
I did read the article again after you located it for me - and reached for the cold compress again! It's so difficult isn't it when you're not a scientist to pick your way through all the distortions and exaggerations on both sides and know what is left when you take those away. I suspect that the truth of this is complex and, as always, lies somewhere in the middle.
One of the most disturbing things I found about the programme (which I've never heard anybody mention again)was the revelation that people in developing countries eg Africa are being deprived of the resources we take for granted (mainly electricity)because of a reluctance on the part of the developers to build new power stations. The developers apparently insist on solar panels to generate power but those are not enough to generate enough electricity and so the countries continue to suffer. For all the hoo hah nobody has suggested cliosing down our power stations (imagine if they did!) and so the inequality continues.
It's all so difficult isn't it? Being ethical. The darkened room beckons..
Best Wishes
Joan
PS I'll look out for the book. What we desperately need is a balanced view by a knowledgeable person with no axe to grind. Maybe..
